Saturday 9July 2005: Saturday's semi-final was held under variable skies and warm temperatures. With the threat of rain diminishing, a large crowd watched the competition and the many demonstrations and exhibits on the Charleville Estate in Tullamore.

The semi-final was held on Field 1, but the course configuration was changed.

The set out and fetch panels were to the left of their positions in the qualifying rounds and, unlike Thursday and Friday, the sheep turned the post in a counter-clockwise direction and were driven right to the drive panels and left across the field on the cross-drive before being turned left after the cross-drive panels to the shedding ring. The shedding ring and pen were in the same positions as the qualifying runs.

The best run of the morning was by Mr. W.I McConnell of Scotland and Jaff with a 379, followed by Mr. S. van der Zweep of Netherlands and Glen with a 367. Only two of the first 16 handlers retired in the morning. Other morning scores ranged from 174 to 339. Mr. W.G. Watt of England with York resumed the competition after lunch with a score of 360, followed shortly thereafter by a 379 from Mr. E.C. MacKinnon of Scotland with Glen. Many qualifying scores were recorded late in the afternoon after the skies cleared and winds calmed. The qualifying score for the Championship was 335, recorded by Mr. D. Robertson of Scotland with Cap II.

The best score of the day was 398 by Mr. Jim Cropper of England with Sid. The run was solid from start to finish. Defending ISDS World Champion Aled Owen with Bob did not fare as well, retiring at the cross-drive. Former International Supreme Champion handlers John Wilson and Bobby Henderson also failed to qualify for the Sunday final.
Bobby Dalziel's Scottish National Champion Spot failed to qualify, but Bobby's Dell qualified with a score of 366. Current English National Champion Michael Longton and Monty qualified with a score of 343 in the last run of the day. Serge van der Zweep qualified both of his dogs for the final, recording a 367 with Glen and a 336 with Roy. Tomorrow's final will feature five dogs from Scotland, three from England, two each from Netherlands, Wales and Ireland, and one dog each from Germany and Sweden.

Team winners were announced mid-morning. Teams of five dogs and handlers representing each country in the trial were nominated by national representatives before the competition. The rank position for each handler on his or her trial field was determined from the qualifying trials, with the country with the lowest cumulative score declared the winner.
Although the first place position of Scotland was no surprise, Germany showed the strength of its team by placing second, followed by Ireland. Surprisingly, Canada and Sweden placed fourth in the team competition, which is indicative of their competitiveness in the trials.
