Friday 8 July 2005:
Today's qualifying trials began in a heavy mist,
although the skies lifted later in the morning.
The trial fields and sheep were mostly unaffected
by the weather, and good runs were recorded early
in the day by Mr. S. Hindenes of Norway with
Tweed on Field 1 with a score of 189, by Mr. S.
Gallagher of Ireland with Jan on Field 2 (190),
and by Mr. J.A. Hansen of Norway with Tika on
Field 3 (191). Except for Field 2, scores were
slightly higher today than yesterday, with the
qualifying scores in Fields 1, 2 and 3 of 179,
172 and 172 compared to 166, 194 and 164 on
Thursday. |
Skies lifted around mid-day, and
the crowds watching the trial and visiting
concession tents increased throughout the
afternoon. Spectators were also treated to a
falconry demonstration during lunch, while dog
and duck, dog obedience demonstrations and other
events took place throughout the day between
Fields 1 and 2. Trialing continued beyond the
scheduled 5:00 pm ending time with competition on
Field 2 wrapping up after 7:00 pm in a light
rain. |
The best score of the day was
recorded by Mr. D. I. Morgan of Wales with Ned,
with a 198 on Field 3. Other high scores included
a 196 by Mr. E. Sievers of Germany with Speed, a
194 by Mr C.M. Magnusson of Sweden with Fleet,
191 by Mr. T. Wilson of the United States with
Pearl and Mr. J.A. Hansen of Norway with Tika,
and a 190 by Mr. S. Gallagher of Ireland with
Jan. |

Friday. Tom Wilson of Virginia had the highest
score of the day with 191 on Field 1 with Pearl.
Canadian Scott Glen with Pleat, the reigning U.S.
National Champion, also qualified for Saturday's
semi-final with a 179 |
Ten dogs from Scotland qualified
for the semi-final, more than any other country.
Other qualifiers included six dogs from England,
five each from Ireland and Wales, three each from
Netherlands, Norway, Germany and Sweden, and one
dog each from Canada, Denmark, France and the
United States. Despite sending a strong
contingency from many thousands of miles away, no
New Zealand handler and dog advanced to the
semi-final. |
Defending ISDS World Champion
Aled Owen with Bob qualified for the semi-final.
Aled and Bob had a solid run at 189 and were
edged out of second place on outrun, lift and
fetch points by Mr. S. Hindenes of Norway with
Tweed. Both Serge van der Sweep of the
Netherlands and Bobby Dalziel of Scotland will
run two dogs on Saturday. |

promises to be an exciting competition between
some of the best dogs and handlers in the world
with the first run beginning at 8:00 am.
